How to make a tasty alternative to porridge

Most runners understand what carbohyrate loading is, how to do it, and what the benefits are. So I'm not going to go into that here. But one thing I will say is, most runners are easily bored with the same old low GI foods like porridge & pasta, so I want to give some extra ideas by telling you what I eat to carb load prior to a run.

Firstly, I do think there are benefits to adding natural sugars (fruit sugars & honey) so lots of my pre race food has these in, or I add them myself.

My snacks include;
Porridge with various optional extras, made with soya milk
Toasted bagels with honey, sugar free jam, nutella or peanut butter
Wholemeal muffins with the same as above
Sliced malt loaf
Polenta made thick. Sliced like bread with tomato & chilli sauce
Home made oats and bran breakfast with greek yoghurt and honey.

I thought it might be a good idea to show you how simple it is to make a very tasty option to the good old, boring porridge. Something that is so tasty, you will have trouble resisting in through the day. But yet its served straight from the fridge and can be tailored to suit your own personal taste.

So here goes;

Please leave a message and tell me what you think, especially if you go away and make some for yourself.

  1. This breakfast looks fanatastic! I'm going to try this straight away and let you know how I get on. It looks deeeeelish! I do love my porridge but it's great to have a breakfast alternative of equal nutritional value. Thanks for the other tips too - carb-based meals can become so "samey" and uninspiring sometimes.

  2. The breakfast exepriment was a success! I used rice milk instead of soya, which tasted fine. I need to experiment with the quantities a bit as I think I made it a little *too* runny. All in all, it was tasty and lovely to wake up to a "ready-prepared" brekkie, I must admit sometimes I can't be bothered with the faff of porridge.
    I heartily recommend this to everyone - try it, it's lovely.

  3. Tried this today in prep for my weekend run and it was lovely. Might have put a bit too much milk in, so have to work on that though.

    Best part has got to be taking my fustrations of the day out on the nuts with a rolling pin ;oD
