Rodley Run Press Release - Sept 13th 2010

For Immediate Release

THE RODLEY FUN RUN FOR CANCER RESEARCH UK PASSES £30,000

Stephen Auker, (54), charity runner from Riddlesden, and his family celebrated the third Rodley Fun Run on Sunday 12 September.

This is a half marathon with a difference – participants could choose to walk, cycle or run the 13 mile event along our beautiful Leeds to Liverpool canal from Calverley Bridge, Rodley back to Victoria Park. Making this a truly ‘family friendly’ & social event

The aim of the event was to boost his fund raising amount from £28,000 (inc gift aid) to over £30,000. All proceeds are for Cancer Research UK.

The around 100 amazing participants were greeted at the start by Emmerdale’s Suzanne Shaw who started the event and then drove over to Victoria Park to welcome them all back from their feat of endurance.

Suzanne said: “When Stephen contacted me to support the Rodley Run I jumped at the chance because several of my family members have experienced or been lost to cancer and also to support Stephen’s amazing bid to raise £50,000 for Cancer Research UK.”

Andrea Membe, Cancer Research UKs Area Volunteer Manager for West Yorkshire, said: “We are absolutely delighted that Stephen has decided to attempt such a great challenge to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Andrea said: “Stephen, his friends and family have done so much preparation in organising the Rodley Run. 100 amazing people turned up on Sunday morning to bright sunshine and blue sky and set off walking, cycling and running along the beautiful Leeds to Liverpool Canal. I cannot thank everybody enough for all their support.”

Stephen, who has featured in the Keighley News many times since he started running four years ago said: “Running is a great way to get fit, I have lost lour stone in weight and kept it off.  I have also met some brilliant people and made new friends whilst running”.  But I could not have organised this continually growing annual event without support from some local businesses, family/friends. Also the Explorer Scouts and Cobbdalers who stepped in to assist with all the en-route marshalling”.

Local businesses who supported The Rodley Fun Run are;
Towler and Staines, Bradford Road, who provided a free BBQ for every entrant and supplied a gas barbecue as top prize in a draw.
Co-op Late Shop, Riddlesden. Supplied, all water, bananas, chocolate and sweets.
Greg Ellis, manager of the Co-op said; “It’s a pleasure to be able to help Stephen who has worked so hard for 4 years in difficult financial times, to raise £30,000

Anyone wishing to support Stephen’s mammoth quest to reach his £50,000 target can do so in one of 2 ways i.e. by sponsoring his next charity run on 3rd of October www.justgiving.com/stephenauker  or by registering to take part in next years Rodley to Keighley Fun Run. www.rodleyrun.co.uk
